White Hat SEO Techniques to Combat Penguin
White hat SEO is a lost art some would say, but it's not dead yet. As many of you already know Google penguin has created an uproar in the SEO community. There were some people that were hit hard by penguin, and I wanted you to know it's not over for you. If you've seen a decrease in traffic, you've done something wrong with your site. There are a variety of things that you can do, and I would start by looking at your link building techniques.
Anchor Text
Did you have the same anchor text throughout your content because if you did that's a problem. Your anchor text should be different for the majority of your links. Some of the anchor text can have a keyword you're trying to target, and some of them could just be the URL itself. This makes your site look more natural. You shouldn't have thousands of links that are exactly the same.
Natural links
Google knows if your backlinks are natural looking or not. The best strategy for getting the most traffic, and staying in Google's good graces is to have natural links. What are natural links you might ask? They are the foundation of your website. I know many of you are tempted to just buy thousands of backlinks because it's easier than creating them manually. You want to stay away from link building packages because they are a red flag for Google. Having an abundance of links in a short amount of time is a huge give away that you're doing something wrong. I would advise to get natural links search for PR8 and PR9 sites to place links on. I've placed some links on these sites and I have gotten almost instant results.
Google Plus
I see this all the time people promoting a business or website never link it to their Google Plus profile, huge mistake. I thought the same thing, but after I tried it I saw my rank increase. All you have to do is create a Google Plus account, and it will ask you in your profile for a website, and paste your website there with the appropriate keywords. It's that simple, most of you are trying to get traffic from Twitter and Facebook, but you should focus on Google Plus. It's the future of marketing and you can't get more white hat than that.

Small businesses should know their backlink profiles. A lack of branded anchors and brand mentions is a clear signal of manipulation, and therefore a rank killer.
